Gifted children: signs and how to support them
Having high abilities doesn’t always mean good grades or feeling well.
Common signs
- Intense curiosity and questions beyond their age.
- Learns quickly what interests them and gets bored with repetition.
- High emotional sensitivity and a strong sense of justice.
- Perfectionism and fear of making mistakes.
- Sometimes, lack of interest or low performance at school.
When it isn’t what it seems
High abilities can coexist with ADHD or autism, and are sometimes mistaken for them. That is why a complete assessment, done by a specialised team, is worth having before drawing conclusions.
How to support them
Value effort over results, leave room for mistakes and play, and talk to the school. In therapy we work on the child’s emotional management and self-esteem and guide the family.
