How to help your child with ADHD at home and school
Helping a child with ADHD starts with understanding how their mind works, not by demanding more.
At home
- Short, visible routines: a list with drawings or photos helps more than repeating orders.
- One instruction at a time, making eye contact.
- Homework in short blocks with movement breaks.
- Acknowledge what goes well before correcting what doesn’t.
With the school
Talk to the tutor or the school counsellor, share what works at home and ask for reasonable adjustments. Working together with families and schools is part of how I work.
Emotions count too
Many children with ADHD feel they “do everything wrong”. Listening without judging and naming what they feel protects their self-esteem. Therapy gives them tools and gives you concrete guidelines.
