Autism in adults: what it is and when to ask for help

The autism spectrum is a different way of processing the world, and in adults it is sometimes discovered late.

How it can look in adults

  • Social fatigue: being with people is draining, even when enjoyed.
  • A need for routines and distress at unexpected changes.
  • Sensitivity to noise, light, textures or smells.
  • Very intense, detailed interests.
  • Effort to “imitate” what is socially expected, known as masking.

Why it is found late

Many adults learned to compensate and came to therapy because of anxiety, exhaustion or relationship difficulties. Looking at what lies behind can make sense of a whole life story.

When to ask for help

When you recognise yourself in these descriptions and would like to understand yourself better or feel less alone. The assessment belongs to a professional team; in therapy I can help you make sense of what is happening and build strategies that respect who you are.
