ADHD in women: why it is spotted late
Many women get the explanation at 30, 40 or later, after years of silent effort.
Why it goes unnoticed
For years ADHD was described with restless boys in mind. In many girls and women it shows more on the inside: absent-mindedness, daydreaming, perfectionism, exhaustion from trying to “keep up with everything”. Because they don’t disrupt the class, nobody looks.
What they usually tell me
- “I try twice as hard at what comes easily to others”.
- Mess that causes shame, or rigid order to compensate.
- Labels such as “lazy”, “oversensitive” or “scatterbrained”.
- Hormonal changes that worsen attention and emotions.
What helps
Understanding how your mind works, letting go of the guilt and building strategies that fit you: routines that actually last, kind organisation and emotion management. The assessment is done by a professional; starting to talk about it already helps.
